The Three Tiered Structure of the Cloud Model

The Three Tiered Structure of the Cloud Model

When most people decide to seek cloud storage, they don’t understand the underpinnings of the cloud. While they don’t need to know everything about it, understanding the general way that it works can help the transition into the cloud.

Three-Tiered Structure

The private cloud solution has three structures:

  1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  3. Software as a Service (SaaS)

IaaS: IaaS is also known as Haas (Hardware as a Service). When a business wants to outsource their storage, hardware, servers and networking, they turn to companies providing IaaS of HaaS. The company must house all of the equipment on their servers, run it from their servers, and maintain them.

PaaS: This service allows people to rent hardware, operating systems, storage and networking online. This is different from IaaS because the stored components are made available to the customer, rather than the customer providing the components to have stored.

SaaS: Software as a Service provides software to customers online. This is different from the PaaS in that it only offers software rather than the whole package. While this may seem like it’s not as powerful, it does have its benefits. It provides easier administration, automatic updates, collaboration among users, and global access.

What’s Right for Your Business?

With three structures, it can be difficult to understand if you should go with IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS. Ask yourself these questions to help you choose the right one for your business.

  • Do you already own all of the hardware, networking and operating system software? If yes, IaaS could be the right choice for you.

  • Are you just starting out, and need to build your business with a better operating system, networking, and hardware capability?  If yes, PaaS could be the best choice for you.

  • Do you run a small business that is in need of better data organization and accessibility? If yes, SaaS could help you greatly.

Seeking Services in the Cloud

Seeking one of these cloud model structures is easy because there are many companies offering them due to demand. When choosing a cloud solution, make sure it provides everything you need for the price you can afford now and into the future. Many companies have hidden fees, which could end up making you pay more than you ever thought you would have to with this type of business tool.
